You can, of course, make the pilgrimage to truffle territory yourself. Truffle-tourism has recently brought modest prosperity to the remote market-towns in France and Italy where truffles are traditionally sold. Head for the Perigord, Languedoc and Upper Provence from December to March for the black; and to Piedmont, Umbria, Tuscany, the Marche (plus neighbouring regions) from October to late November for the white. Check local tourism websites for places, dates and current truffle-prices.
