It's a brisk, sunny day and I'm admiring the view from the top of the mountain in Courmayeur.
It's one of the oldest Italian ski resorts and is on the opposite side of the Mont Blanc tunnel from Chamonix in France.
Behind me, I can see the towering and jagged Aiguille Noire, though I know from the map that Mont Blanc is up there behind it, lost in the clouds.
Below me, I can see Courmayeur itself, and beyond it the Aosta Valley stretches off into the distance, towards Gressoney and Alagna.
