When foreigners write about Italy, says Italian journalist Beppe Severgnini, they tend to produce either "chronicles of a love affair or diaries of a disappointment." In other words: breathless paeans to the country's beauty, fine food and warm family life, à la "Under the Tuscan Sun," or moralistic exposés of disorder, corruption and organized crime.
