Carnival in the Algarve

For many people, the carnival in the Algarve is focused around the huge display of floats and masses of people centred in the market town of Loule. This year, we decided to go and have a look at how other people celebrate this annual event. The carnival is a festive season which occurs immediately before Lent; the main events are usually during January and February.
Carnival typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus masque and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations, which mark an overturning of daily life.
So, we ended up in the small village of Alte, which is located approximately 20km inland from the centre of Loule. The views as we climbed the hills were amazing across the unspoilt hills of the Algarve, something we think most people don’t realise is there!
