Playing golf at the Quinta do Lago course on the Algarve is as good as it gets, and there’s also plenty for the kids to do. The weather is always perfect and it’s a relatively short flight from Britain.

The Algarve is a favourite place with many footballers and as we’re all off work at the same time, we tend to bump into each other a lot during the summer.

You’re also likely to encounter players in Dubai. England trained there before the 2002 World Cup. Some of us liked it so much we bought property there. I’ve since sold up, but I still go back every two or three years.

The climate is superb in winter and there are plenty of activities for our children. It’s hard to dislike a place that tries so hard: everything is usually the biggest or the best. Dubai is also very safe, secure and clean.

When I was a child, a lot of our holidays were caravan trips down to Abersoch and other places in North Wales. My brother has a caravan now so, who knows, we may find ourselves back on our old stamping ground one day.
