A man claiming to run into trouble on a fishing trip has victimized people in both Fergus Falls and Pelican Rapids.
People in both communities have recently lost large sums of money to the scam.
A Pelican Rapids resident was hit by the same scam twice in two days and lost about $7,000, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department .
A man claiming to be a grandson told victims he was on a fishing trip in Canada, got into trouble and needed money wired to pay fines. The caller instructed the victim to go to Wal-Mart and get a Money Gram and wire it to Barrie, Ontario, Canada. The individual called the victim back the next day and said he needed more money for fines. The victim later found out the grandson was not in Canada.
On Feb. 6, a Fergus Falls resident fell victim to the same scam.
The dollar amount was not available, police Chief Tim Brennan said.
