The Manitoba Floodway Authority has warned the public to stay away from the outlet control structure in Lockport as flodway construction proceeds.
The floodway authority said it is maintaining an alternative river access for fishers angling for the catch of the day in the Red River.
The alternative gives fishers a way to haul their ice fishing huts to the river while making sure they stay out of the way of floodway construction.
Historically fishers have used the east side of the Red River in the vicinity of the Lockport outlet to reach the Red. This site now is part of the floodway’s construction zone, so the floodway authority issued the notice. The alternative is on the west bank of the Red River through the Cats on the Red property. It’s a local outfitter and fishing lodge.
Fishers are also reminded they use the access at their own risk. As of March 1, access will be closed to vehicular traffic.
The public is reminded to always exercise extreme caution when traveling on ice.
