The Canadian Esox will be holding their annual muskie event this weekend out in Kenora.
About 20 teams will be hitting the water trying to gain bragging rights for this season. The toothy critter bite has been pretty sporadic as the muskies are in a transition period. They are moving from their summer haunts following the baitfish that are preparing to spawn.
Water temperature is critical so look for the pockets of warmer water and don't be afraid to fish shallow. Fish will hang out on rocks as the tend to hold the heat from the sun a little longer. If you really want to catch a fatty. work rocks adjacent to deep water. Big muskie need to feel secure and deep water close by provides them an excellent escape route. Most of the fish that have come to the boat over 50 inch have been in a location just like that.
This is the time of year to really pay attention to points were the wind is thrashing against the shore. Saddles are key and look for wind-induced current as these areas often hold multiple muskies waiting to feed. Remember if you are not on the water you won't catch any of these monsters. The big fall run will soon begin for walleyes on the Red River and Muskie on LOTW. Get out, take a child and catch the fish of a lifetime.
