Fishing report
Thunderstorms have slowed the fishing this week, with cooler weather and sunny skies expected to improve angling possibilities for the weekend. The walleye and yellow perch fishing on Lake Erie should be good after the wind and waves settle. Catfish will again be in the spotlight on inland waters.
Cleveland area
The fishing pressure has been very light this week because of wind and rain. Walleye had been caught east of the Cleveland Crib in about 45 feet of water, with yellow perch biting around the Crib at 44 to 46 feet. Shoreline anglers have been catching a few perch, white bass and sheepshead, as well as rock bass along the Cleveland Harbor shoreline. The Rocky River had been giving up some smallmouth bass and carp, but the rains should kick up river levels.
Central Lake Erie
Walleye fishing should still be good along the sand bar from Vermilion to Lorain, with some steelhead trout mixed in deeper depths of 60 to 72 feet. Walleye have also been reported caught in about 60 to 72 feet of water off the Chagrin and Grand rivers and north of Ashtabula. The yellow perch bite had begun along the hump about a mile northwest of the mouth of the Grand River.
Western Lake Erie
The walleye fishing has been fair to good, although trophy walleye have been harder to find in recent days. Some walleye have moved up on the reefs early and late in the day, with Gull Island Shoal a top spot, as well as the Canadian reefs west of Pelee Island. Most walleye are being caught in open water northwest of North Bass Island on the Ohio-Ontario border and west of Rattlesnake Island.
The yellow perch fishing is perking up around Rattlesnake and Green islands and on the north side of the Marblehead Peninsula near Lakeside. Perch are also being caught along the west side of Catawba Island.
Inland lakes
The recent rains should boost the fishing on northeast Ohio reservoirs suffering from low water conditions, especially East Branch Reservoir in Geauga County, which has been in poor shape after drawdowns by the city of Akron. Look for catfish to bite in the areas where streams flow into inland lakes. The largemouth bass fishing has been fair, with anglers casting topwater lures to shoreline structure and weed beds early in the day. Diving plugs and soft plastic lures have been a good choice during the day, with anglers working the points and outside edges of weed beds.
The Pymatuning Reservoir's annual kids fishing derby produced large catches of crappies, bluegills, catfish and bass recently. Walleye fishermen are still having difficulty catching fish, especially those longer than 15 inches.
The Portage Lakes bass fishing has been good, especially on Long Lake, which has an abundance of 15-inch bass. Channel catfish are also being caught there.
