CO Tricia Plautz (Henning) finalized an investigation where an illegal walleye was taken. Plautz continued to work on background investigations and checked area ice anglers. Fishing success is rather scattered.
CO Paul Nelson (Elbow Lake) reports enforcement efforts this past week consisted of following up on fish and big game calls that have recently come in. He also had some vehicle maintenance performed, gave a presentation to students in the Ashby School and was interviewed by a student about the career of a Conservation Officer.
CO Shane Osborne (Evansville) reports enforcement this past week consisted of checking area anglers and snowmobile activity. He received a complaint of fishermen trespassing. Osborne contacted the individual who stated that he pulled his fish house across his aunts property. Osborne told him that he would go and check his tracks on his aunts property. The subject told him that he would save Osborne a drive and told him that he trespassed on the agricultural field.
CO Mike Shelden (Alexandria) focused on ice fishing activity. Ice conditions are now about 16-18 inches on area lakes. Most fishermen are driving cars and trucks to their fish houses. Snowmobiling activity has slowed due to lack of snow. There is still a lot of ice fishing activity despite the very cold weather. Officer Shelden reports receiving numerous calls regarding upcoming FAS classes for youths. A couple of injured deer calls were also handled. Officer Shelden has also been investigating calls on fishermen taking more that one walleye over 20 per day. Common violations include no ID on fish houses and angling with extra lines.
CO Jeff Johanson (Osakis) continued to monitor the angling and spearing activity on area lakes. A few ATVs and snowmobiles are being used, but the majority of people are now using vehicles. Calls/complaints were received regarding possible overlimits and slot limit violations on a special regulation lake. Additional time was spent patrolling for predator hunting activity and continuing work on background investigations.
CO Dan Baumbarger (Wheaton) reports that the cold weather has kept most fishermen and snowmobilers inside this past week. Time was also spent checking snowmobiles and ice fishermen. CO Baumbarger taught at the snowmobile safety class in Wheaton, and spoke to the local sportsmens club at their annual meeting. He also spoke to a DARE class in Browns Valley. Enforcement action was taken for fishing without a license in possession and no identification on fish houses.
