Many years ago when I was actively involved with PETA and other groups, I was young, headstrong, and assured of my beliefs in the animal-rights philosophy, yet naive of the “big picture.” I recall being troubled by one of the PETA campaigns at the time, a drive against fishing (aimed against individuals, by seeking to place national parks off-limits to it, and by increasing the cost of fishing licenses). With all the other far more important problems out there, and pardon the pun, bigger “fish to fry” (e.g., unnecessary animal testing by the pharmaceuticals, useless torture of animals for the cosmetics industry, factory farming, the fur industry, or even the related problem of overfishing by huge industrial fleets and drift-nets), it seemed to me that public fishing issue was an enormous waste of resources.
I will add, that even back then, I adhered to a personal philosophy which cast me outside the mold of other vegetarian proponents, and that was I had few qualms with “hunters,” feeling that individuals willing to kill and process their own animals, were due a little respect over the “civilized masses” who contribute far worse to the suffering of animals, by paying for and consuming meat that came from factory farms (in essence, paying others to do the dirty work for them, out-of-sight and out-of-mind, cruelty of boundless proportions). {*1} My raising the fishing issue at the time, only brought me chides of derision from well-intentioned, but under-informed activists, vegetarians, hippie-chicks and the like.
The following lecture by George Hunt, came after he attended the 1992 UNCED Summit in Rio de Janeiro [oh, my once beloved home], and was shocked to learn how the environmentalist movement has been compromised and re-directed. The clip also does an excellent job of telling you who the “real” world leaders are (as opposed to the puppet presidents and prime ministers most know of):
Now that I can see the “big picture,” I’d hazard to guess, that some foundation gave PETA a significant donation with the stipulation (or strong recommendation) that the issue of “public fishing” be addressed. What my intuition told me back then, and what I know all too well now, is the focus of such campaigns is to further deprive man of any means he may have of independence and self-sufficiency.
Now, I’m simply trying to relate to the subject from personal experience, and in no way singling out PETA. I still believe, that despite this previous lapse in judgment, they are one of the best animal rights groups out there, and are excellent at raising awareness, especially among the young. {*2} However, I do need to stress that the following groups, are all ultimately working against the good of mankind (either through infiltration and misdirection, or some, even set up explicitly for the purpose): Sierra Club, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Friends of the Earth, Wildlife Habitat Canada, Oxfam America, GreenPeace, National Wildlife Federation, Nature Conservancy, National Resources Defense Council (NRDC). {*3}
For those further interested in more current information and further understanding how UN Agenda 21 will affecting you, please watch the following lecture made by Joan Peros after she attended the 2002 conference in South Africa:
Take all of this into consideration as you now hear the “global warming” agenda preached from every corner of the media. Learn about how NGO’s (non-governmental organizations) are used by the power elites to form the classic “pressure from above / pressure from below” pincer movements we inevitably find ourselves trapped by. And, if you find yourself in a situation like I was, where some well-meaning group you’re supporting strays into a questionable path, find out why!
*1: As Ralph Waldo Emerson so eloquently said, “You have just dined, and however scrupulously the slaughterhouse is concealed in the graceful distance of miles, there is complicity.” [LB]
*2: Coincidentally, just last night, I stumbled across some documentary on HBO about Ingrid Newkirk, and saw Abraham Foxman of the ADL (Anti-Defamation League) bad-mouthing PETA. Hence, criticism coming from such a nefarious source, can only be interpreted in a positive light. [LB]
*3: The WWF, founded by Prince Philip of Britain and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, is probably the worst of the groups listed. [LB]
