DNR says Mille Lacs Walleye population way down, cites warmer weather
AITKIN, Minn. (AP) The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says its recent surveys show a dramatic drop in walleyes in Lake Mille Lacs.
The DNR says warm water temperatures contributed to a sharp increase in the number of fish that died after being caught and released by anglers in June. Typically between 2 and 3 percent of those walleyes die, but this past June that increased to 12 percent.
DNR officials say recent netting surveys showed the fewest pounds of walleye since the study began in 1983. And that could mean tightened rules for walleyes during this winter's ice-fishing season and maybe next spring.
