Travelling in and out of Northwest Angle

Friday, 29. April 2011

The better part of five days was spent fishing and snowmobiling at Oak Island on Minnesota’s Northwest Angle. Now its time to pack, load the sleds back onto the trailer and close another chapter of one great vacation.
The time to head back home has arrived.
For someone who hasn’t heard or known about the Northwest Angle, it is part of Minnesota which is towards north from the 49th parallel into Lake of the Woods and is bordered by Canada on three corners. You can get there by road. There will be customs check coming and leaving the area. This is an easy task when crossing the staffed border stations in the northern part of Roseau or Warroad, Minn. However on the Angle, moving from Manitoba into Minn. upon arrival – or from Minnesota to Manitoba upon arrival – or from Minnesota into Manitoba upon departure – this route would need road trippers to check in by phone at one of the three remote crossing stations.
I’ve made a number of trips to the Northwest Angle in a span of years and used the remote crossing phones without any difficulty. Crossing in Minnesota, one would just need to push the button on the telephone with the American flag insignia and converse with the border guard in Warroad. When departing from Angle and coming back through Manitoba, one would just press the button with the Canadian flag and talk to some border guard.
