Netflix customers see red after price hike

Thursday, 14. July 2011

Cameron wins fight to limit aid UK will give Greece

Friday, 24. June 2011
David Cameron has won his battle to limit the amount of money the UK will have to contribute towards a second financial bail-out for Greece. Nike Air Max Lebron VII(7) The current 110bn euros ($156bn; £98bn) Greek rescue package is a combination of funds from fellow eurozone nations and the International Monetary Fund. With a second bail-out due in the autumn, there had been a suggestion cash from EU-wide funds may be used. This will now not happen, but the UK will still contribute via the IMF. "This is the right outcome for the British taxpayer," a Downing Street source told the BBC after the vote. Coach Shoes The confirmation that the European contribution to the second Greek rescue package will again be limited to eurozone countries - those that use the single currency - was made in Brussels by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy. Mr Rompuy was speaking at the end of the first day of a summit of EU leaders, which Mr Cameron is also attending. The European money currently being given to Greece comes from the European Financial Stability Facility, to which only the 17 eurozone nations contribute. The UK instead contributes to the wider European Financial Stabilisation Mechanism, which covers the whole of the EU. Nike Air Max Light The Greek parliament will vote next week on the government's latest round of spending cuts. If the vote goes through, then Greece will get the next 12bn euros instalment of the current 110bn euros of eurozone and IMF funds. Greece needs this money by 15 July, or else it will default on its loan payments. However, many economists think that even if Greece gets the latest 12bn euros it will still default at some time in the future.

SpongeBob lends name to new mushroom species

Thursday, 23. June 2011
A new species of mushroom has been named by its discoverers after the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants. Cheap Air Max The fungus, named Spongiforma squarepantsii by the researchers at San Francisco State University (SFSU), was found during an expedition to the forests of Borneo. S. squarepantsii is shaped like a sea sponge and, say its discoverers, has a fruity or musty smell. Details are published in the scientific journal Mycologia. SpongeBob is the star of an eponymous television cartoon series which began in 1999. The character, who wears a short pair of square, brown trousers, lives in the fictional locality of Bikini Bottom. The new mushroom is only one of two species that belong in the genus Spongiforma. The other one is found in central Thailand, but differs in its colour and odour. Coach Kristin Handbags "We expect that it has a wider range than these two areas," said Professor Dennis E Desjardin, from SFSU, who is a co-author of the scientific paper. "But perhaps we haven't seen it in more places because we haven't collected it yet in some of the under-explored forests of the region." In addition to its resemblance to a sea sponge, under a scanning electron microscope, the spore-producing area of the fungus looks like a seafloor carpeted in tube sponges, say the researchers. This further convinced them to name the species after the cartoon character. The researchers said that Spongiforma's ancestors had the characteristic cap and stem of other mushrooms, but that these features had been lost over time. Nike Air Max 2011 The function of the mushroom's stem is to lift the reproductive spores off the ground so that they can be dispersed more easily by the wind and passing animals. The cap protects the spores from drying out. In its humid home in the forests of Sarawak on Borneo, Spongiforma has taken a different approach to keeping its spores wet. "It's become gelatinous or rubbery," explained Professor Desjardin. "Its adaptation is to revive very quickly if it dries out, by absorbing very small amounts of moisture from the air." Professor Desjardin added: "We go to underexplored forests around the world, and we spend months at a time collecting all the mushrooms and focusing on various groups. Coach Poppy Handbags "And when we do that type of work, on average, anywhere from 25% to 30% of the species are new to science."

Teenager arrested on suspicion of hacking

Wednesday, 22. June 2011
A teenager has been arrested in the UK in a joint Scotland Yard and FBI probe into the hacking of websites. Cheap Kids Dunk High The man, named locally as Ryan Cleary, 19, was arrested in Wickford, Essex. Police have not identified him. Scotland Yard said the raid followed a series of distributed denial of service attacks. It comes days after hackers from a group called Lulz Security (LulzSec) attacked a number of websites both in Britain and the United States. Scotland Yard would not say if Tuesday's raid was connected to LulzSec but said it had been a "pre-planned, intelligence-led" operation. Computer examined However, BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner said the Metropolitan Police's e-crimes unit had confirmed the raid was linked to the recent intrusion attacks on the websites of the CIA and Britain's Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) Nike Air Max Light. It says the teenager's computer was being examined for data linked to Sony, which recently came under cyber attack. Mr Cleary was arrested under the Computer Misuse Act and Fraud Act and is being questioned at a central London police station. Earlier a Scotland Yard spokesman said: "The arrest follows an investigation into network intrusions and distributed denial of service attacks against a number of international business and intelligence agencies by what is believed to be the same hacking group. "Searches at a residential address in Wickford, Essex, following the arrest last night, have led to the examination of a significant amount of material. These forensic examinations remain ongoing." Nike outlet Mr Cleary's mother spoke to BBC Essex and confirmed her son had been arrested at 0330 BST on Tuesday. She said he had been obsessed with computers since he was 12 and added: "Computers were his world." An FBI spokesman said it had no comment "at this time". 'Online laughs' When Lulz Security, or LulzSec, first appeared in May, the group portrayed itself as a light-hearted organisation, bent on creating online fun and Lulz (laughs). But LulzSec is said to have been planning to establish itself as a rival to Anonymous, the hacking group embroiled in the WikiLeaks fallout. Nike Air Max LTD LulzSec initially targeted US broadcasters PBS and Fox and gaming firms. But the Twitter page @LulzSec then declared its intention to break into government websites and leak confidential documents. LulzSec is also suspected of hacking into CIA, Sony and NHS websites. Gary McKinnon, an unemployed computer programmer who allegedly hacked into Pentagon and Nasa computers, has been fighting extradition to the US since 2002.

Sectarian trouble flares at east Belfast's Short Strand

Tuesday, 21. June 2011
Homes in east Belfast's Short Strand area have been attacked by a large group of masked men, Sinn Fein has said. Kids Dunk High Crowds were still at an interface on the lower Newtownards Road and Bryson Street in the early hours of Tuesday. Lord Mayor of Belfast Niall O Donnghaile, a Sinn Fein councillor for the area, was at the scene. He told the BBC that 60-100 masked men fully dressed in camouflage gear have been attacking homes. The attacks were carried out at the Mountpottinger Road as well as the lower Newtownards Road, Mr O Donnghaile said. Air Max Shoes Police are at the scene and community and youth workers have been trying to defuse the situation. 'Residents injured' "It's a tense and dangerous situation," Mr O Donnghaile said. "They've hit homes with paint bombs, pipe bombs and petrol bombs. "A pipe bomb-type device has gone off. There's a number of Short Strand residents who are injured and a number of homes have been damaged." Nike outlet Police have confirmed that a large number of people had gathered in Bryson Street and that petrol bombs have been thrown. Ulster Unionist MLA Michael Copeland said several hundred people "were involved in hand-to-hand fighting". "You have two sides to these stories. My understanding is that homes on the Newtownards Road have been attacked from Strand Walk and the grounds of St Matthew's in the last couple of nights," he said. Cheap Air Max "It really doesn't really matter who is responsible at this stage. It's getting it stopped that is the problem."

Tube workers on strike over sacked worker

Monday, 20. June 2011
Tube workers are on strike in protest at the sacking of a driver. Nike Dunk Low The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) alleges Arwyn Thomas was sacked for his union activities and demands his reinstatement. London Underground (LU) said it will abide by a tribunal ruling due shortly and the strike will "achieve nothing". The strike - which started at 2100 BST - is due to last six hours, but LU claims it will cause little disruption. Three further strikes are also planned. It said a near normal service was expected on Sunday night and Monday morning and advised passengers to make their journeys as usual. Nike Air Max Burst LU managing director Mike Brown said: "This strike action will achieve nothing and I urge the RMT leadership to calmly await the outcome of the employment tribunal without any further strikes "I have given a cast-iron assurance that if the tribunal rules that we should re-instate or re-engage Arwyn Thomas, then we will do so. "We have given that assurance in writing before this strike action and I make it again now, so there can be no justification whatsoever for the RMT to continue to threaten Londoners with strike action." Picket lines were mounted at some Tube stations on Sunday night, and a rally in support of Mr Thomas was held at Golders Green. Nike outlet At an interim hearing a judge suggested a tribunal was "likely" to find Mr Thomas was dismissed for his union activities. Further planned strikes - including a 24-hour walkout - could affect people travelling to the Wimbledon tennis championships. An RMT spokesman said: "We are prepared to enter into meaningful negotiations with London Underground to resolve this dispute.

Mistakes 'mean some academies overpaid or underpaid'

Friday, 17. June 2011
Some new academy schools in England have been given too much money by central government and face having it "clawed back". Cheap Women Nike Dunk SB Low Education Secretary Michael Gove says mistakes have been made by local authorities. Hampshire Council says its academies have been given an extra £300 per pupil even though it followed set procedures. The government wants all state-funded schools to become academies, which are outside of council control. Currently about one out of every six schools in England is an academy. They are meant to be funded on the same level as other state schools, but with the money coming directly from central government rather than via councils. Air Max Outlet In addition, they are given an amount of money that would previously have been spent by their local council on their behalf to provide services such as those for children with special educational needs. To determine the level of funding they receive, councils have to tell central government how much they spend per pupil on such services in their area. It is in this reporting that the government says errors have been made, but councils dispute this. 'Flawed system' Mr Gove told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "There have been individual mistakes made by local authorities in the calculation of their Section 251 returns." Nike outlet Asked whether officials in the Department for Education had been responsible for any of the mistakes, he replied: "Not that I am aware of." Mr Gove said the government had been working with a "flawed" system inherited from the previous Labour government. "There is a problem with the financing of all schools because of the funding mechanism that was designed by the last government," he said. Officials at the Department for Education said there had been a "small number of cases" where mistakes had been made by local authorities, which could have led to academies being over- or under-funded. "We don't think this is a big problem for the vast number of authorities," a spokesman said. Air Max Decisions on whether to "claw back" money that had been overpaid would take into account issues such as the scale of the error and the timing, he said. News of the problems emerged as Mr Gove announced 200 under-performing primary schools would be closed next year and converted to academies, under the wing of top schools. Labour then tabled an emergency question in the House of Commons on the issue of the mistakes and academy funding. Its education spokesman, Andy Burnham, said: "It raises a simple question: does the secretary of state have a grip on his budget? Cheap Women Nike Dunk High "On the day that serious questions are being asked about whether he has a properly funded plan to back up the rapid expansion of his academy programme, only this secretary of state could be in Birmingham announcing a further major expansion of it." Mr Burnham added: "Will the minister tell the House how many schools have been over-funded and what is the total amount is that has been paid in error?" Schools minister Nick Gibb told MPs the government was taking action to sort out problems left by Labour. At the weekend it emerged that the government was going to "reconsider" an element of its local education funding relating to academies, following a legal challenge by 26 councils. Air Max Shoes The councils have begun a judicial review of the decision to deduct £148m from their education budgets.

Milburn calls amended NHS plans 'a car crash'

Thursday, 16. June 2011
The coalition's amended plans for the NHS in England are the "biggest car crash" in the service's history, a former health secretary has said. D&G shoes Ex-MP Alan Milburn, David Cameron's social mobility adviser, said taxpayers faced writing "a very large cheque" as efficiency savings were unachievable. "Short-term politics" had been placed above "long-term policy", Mr Milburn wrote in the Daily Telegraph. Changes to the NHS plans followed rows between the Lib Dems and Conservatives. The prime minister has agreed to make major concessions on his plans for the NHS in England, including more controls on competition and a slower pace of change, after criticism from Lib Dem MPs and unions. 'Less reformist' Nike Air Max 97 Mr Milburn, who as health secretary under Tony Blair came into conflict with then Chancellor Gordon Brown over the running of health services, wrote in the Telegraph: "The government's health reforms are the biggest car crash in NHS history. "The temptation to elevate short-term politics above long-term policy proved too much for both David Cameron and Nick Clegg. "Many in both camps inside the coalition consider the U-turn a triumph. But it has the makings of a policy disaster for the NHS and, maybe in time, a political disaster for the government. "It leaves both health policy and British politics in a very different place." Nike outlet He added: "The promise of the coalition was that it would go where New Labour feared to tread when it came to public service reform. There would be no no-go areas. "In fact David Cameron's retreat has taken his party to a far less reformist and more protectionist position than that adopted by Tony Blair and even that of his predecessor Gordon Brown." Mr Milburn described the new policy as the "biggest nationalisation since Nye Bevan created the NHS in 1948". Mr Cameron had handed over control to "the daddy of all quangos", the NHS Commissioning Board. Coach Madison-Handbags Mr Milburn said scrapping the 2013 deadline for giving GP consortia control of commissioning would result in a "patchwork of decision-making for years to come". On the need to make £20bn in efficiency savings, he asked: "So how will the NHS books be balanced? "By the usual device which policy-makers have deployed every decade or so in the NHS. A very large cheque. "It was precisely the situation David Cameron and George Osborne were trying to avoid. Sorry George, but the cash you were saving in your pre-election Budget for tax cuts will now have to be spent on a bail-out for the health service." Cheap Nike Dunk SB Mid

China 'will not use force' in South China Sea disputes

Wednesday, 15. June 2011
China has said it will not resort to the use of force to resolve maritime border disputes in the South China Sea. Cheap Women Nike Dunk Low Several Asian nations claim territory in the South China Sea, which includes important shipping routes and may contain oil and gas deposits. On Monday, Vietnam staged live-fire drills after weeks of rising tensions between the two nations. Vietnam has also issued a decree specifying who would be exempt from military call-up in a time of war. "We will not resort to the use of force or the threat of force," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said. Air Max Shoes Outlet Online He condemned any action that would exacerbate the dispute, and urged those involved to "do more that is beneficial to regional peace and stability". As well as Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan also have rival claims in the area. As chair of the regional grouping Asean last year, Hanoi actively promoted a multilateral approach to the problem. However, Beijing says it prefers to negotiate with individual states separately. Responsibility In an apparent message to China that Vietnam is willing to stand its ground, the Vietnamese government issued a decree earlier specifying which people would be exempt from military service during a time of war. Nike outlet The decree lists eight examples where Vietnamese citizens would not be obliged to join a military call-up. They include people holding senior positions in state organisations and those providing essential services such as lighthouse operators. The BBC's South East Asia correspondent Rachel Harvey says the significance lies not in the exemptions themselves but in the timing of the decree. The news comes a day after the Vietnamese navy conducted exercises it described as routine, but which at least one Chinese newspaper interpreted as a deliberate show of force. Vietnam is engaged in a renewed row with China over sovereignty of two groups of islands in the South China Sea; the Spratly and Paracel islands. Coach Shoes Tensions have escalated following two separate confrontations involving Vietnamese and Chinese boats in recent weeks. In a thinly veiled reference to Hanoi, Mr Hong implied Vietnam was to blame for the recent row. "Some country took unilateral actions to impair China's sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and released groundless and irresponsible remarks with the attempt to expand and complicate the issue of the South China Seas," Mr Hong said. "This is where the problem lies." The US has also expressed concern about China's rising naval ambitions in the region. Cheap Kids Dunk High On Sunday, the Japan-based carrier USS George Washington left port for deployment in the region, which is almost certain to include the South China Sea.

London Marathon snail crawl man Lloyd Scott sacked

Tuesday, 14. June 2011
A charity worker who crawled the London Marathon dressed as Brian the Snail from The Magic Roundabout has been sacked for not raising enough money. D&G shoes Action for Kids fundraiser Lloyd Scott hoped to raise at least £100,000 for the charity but received about £20,000. The 49-year-old former footballer from Essex, who has raised more than £5m for charity over the years, said he was "shocked" by the decision. Action for Kids said Mr Scott was given his notice "due to losses incurred". The charity said that expenses incurred by the charity included publicity and support costs. Mr Scott was accompanied around the course by people dressed as other characters from the Magic Roundabout including Florence, Dylan and Zebedee. 'Deserve better' Nike Air Max Tailwind He suffered nosebleeds and vomiting as he crawled the course at the pace of a mile a day. The fundraiser said: "The trustees made their decision just 11 days after I'd finished the marathon. "I hadn't recovered fully and was unable to fulfil the potential of the event. "I don't think it has been handled in an appropriate manner. Anybody would deserve to be treated better." Nike outlet Action For Kids founder Sally Bishop confirmed that the Board of Trustees asked Mr Scott to leave the charity. "He was given notice according to his contract with us, due to losses incurred in his latest marathon. "Our priority is always to our donors, and the children and families we support. "So it is with regret we had to take this decision." Ms Bishop added: "Whilst Lloyd's involvement in the marathon significantly raised our profile it did not result in any increased funding, and in fact, cost the charity several thousand pounds." Coach Kristin Handbags But Mr Scott said: "The costumes would have been used time and time again for school visits and corporate fundraising." He stressed that the event was "planned, costed and endorsed" by the charity. 'Hardest marathon' One of Mr Scott's previous fundraising efforts was when he took five days to complete the 2002 London Marathon in a deep sea diving suit. But he said his latest attempt "was the hardest marathon I've ever undertaken". Cheap Nike Dunk SB Mid He said he was unable to raise as much as he had hoped because of "the financial climate". He added that public relations for his feat "wasn't handled properly" and he was given the go-ahead for the event "late in the day". "As a result of the marathon a number of fundraising opportunities had arisen - it is a huge shame that I wasn't given the opportunity to maximise these," he said. The former Blackpool, Watford and Leyton Orient footballer fought off leukaemia more than 20 years ago. Coach Poppy Handbags Mr Scott said he was "determined to continue fundraising".
